Mobile automated traffic data acquisition

Portable vehicle identification and classification system

Under the project abbreviation ODEFIS (Ortsveränderliches Fahrzeugidentifikations- und Klassifizierungsystem or portable vehicle identification and classification system) we developed a new mobile measuring system for traffic and vehicle data acquisition during flowing traffic with a precision of 8+1 vehicle class.

It had been developed and constructed together with the project partner Centre for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT) at Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTW) in a R&D joint project as part of the R&D joint project funding of the Free State of Saxony with funding by the Development Bank of Saxony (SAB).

Performance specification

The task of ifn Projekt GmbH together with the science partner had been the development and verification of the mobile portable measuring system for vehicle classification 8+1. The measuring system can work independently of environmental impacts and features scalable structure according to respective measuring requirements at the operation side.

Next to cost efficiency, as advantage for respective clients, the system is characterized by significant profit with regard to precision, mobility and energy efficiency.

Due to the use of laser scanner technology (LIDAR) significant improvements of precision and classification depth had been reached. An evaluation-algorithm for vehicle classification 8+1 had been developed and verified. With the use of a 3.5G-based radio module and a GPS module the following data can be transferred:

• parameters (number, speed, length, height, type, time stamp)
• service sizes (battery level, connectivity, system status)

And also the following features can be guaranteed:

• bidirectional access for parameterization
• position location
• theft protection through construction of geo-fences

The measuring device detects parameters on-site and saves them in internal memory of master. In definable transmission intervals the parameters will be sent to a central server. In case of insufficient network coverage the communication is made via mobile phone network (UMTS/HSDPA or GPRS). The servers receives the data and saves them.

Processing of raw data and initialization process

The developed proprietary firmware for processing of raw data of LIDAR system will be installed on a concentrator and launched automatically with initialization process. Thereby the raw data of LIDAR will be received via Ethernet interface of the concentrator. A resource-saving microprocessor analyses and processes the information in real time.

The second developed proprietary firmware connects to internet via mobile phone network (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS) while initialization process.
In configurable intervals temporary database of the concentrator will be queried for new records. Then the data will be transferred to a central server.

Web application

To get the data in suitable display format, a web application with web-based user interface will be used.

Following tables can be visualised:

• vehicle classification in 8+1 vehicle classes
• parameter calculation
• length classes
• speed classes
• average of daily traffic intensity and amount of heavy-duty traffic

Further applications

  • review of route prohibitions (speeding, restriction on overtaking)
  • review of road works
  • speed monitoring at danger points
  • calculation of road surface according to actual traffic density
